Arusha Runs for Press Freedom as WPFD 2026 Activities Kick Off

The streets of Arusha came alive with energy and purpose as journalists, media practitioners, and stakeholders took part in a vibrant fun run to kick off activities for World Press Freedom Day 2026.

Journalists joined colleagues from across the country in the #MediaFunRun, transforming the city into a moving symbol of solidarity, visibility, and commitment to press freedom.

The initiative continues to grow as a signature activity within World Press Freedom Day celebrations in Tanzania. The first Media Fun Run was held in Dodoma, followed by another edition in Arusha—making this year’s event the third Media Fun Run, and the second to be hosted in Arusha.

Officiating the event, Guest of Honour Evod Kyando, Assistant Director from Habari Maelezo, called on participants to carry the spirit of press freedom beyond the run and into their daily work.

“Let us run with freedom, just as we require the freedom of the press,” he said, urging journalists to amplify the message across communities.

The run was not only a moment of celebration, but also a reminder of the responsibility journalists carry in safeguarding truth and serving the public interest.

One participating journalist reflected on the significance of the event:

“This run is more than just exercise—it’s a statement. It reminds us that press freedom is something we must actively protect, not take for granted.”

The event sets the tone for a week of engagements under World Press Freedom Day 2026, bringing renewed momentum to conversations on media freedom, innovation, and the future of journalism in Tanzania.
