Community Radios Promote Intangible Cultural Heritage in Tanzania

Tanzania Media for Community Development (TAMCODE) through the project “Leveraging Community Radios and Digital Platforms to Promote Intangible Cultural Heritage” has empowered Community Radios and Digital Platforms journalists to promote Intangible Cultural Heritage to enhance employment opportunities for women and youth in Katavi and Rukwa Regions in Tanzania.

The project, according to TAMCODE reports, has enhanced community awareness on intangible cultural heritage, forest conservation and cultural tourism (Kalambo Falls) to foster employment opportunities for youth and women in Katavi and Rukwa region through the visibility of the project from stories aired by community radios, television stations, and those published in newspapers.

According to the reports the journalists and their media platforms reached more than 6 million people in Tanzania, 371,000 people in Mpanda district, the 303,000 residents of Sumbawanga district as well as 316,000 residents of Kalambo districts in Rukwa region.

The project also reached over 5 million people the work was aired through ITV, a leading television station in Tanzania and the Daily News digital a government digital platform in Tanzania.

 ITV is one among the 100 most influential media outlets in East Africa with statistics indicating that 70 percent people in Tanzania watch ITV news at any given time.  The Guardian & Daily Newspapers, projected to have 3.7 million readers per day.  They are the two among the three leading English Newspapers in Tanzania. 

The stories were published both online and off line, inclusive of ten prominent blogs in Tanzania, the Daily News Digital, the Guardian Digital.  Statistics indicate that 50 percent of Tanzanians haveaccess to internet.

Notably, TAMCODE successfully utilized her social media platforms to engage stakeholders. These efforts saw achievement of social media combined 563,000 views across all platforms.
