Each Year on February 13, the world celebrates the World Radio Day in honor of the great role played by this important mode of communication in the world. Radio remains one of the most listened media outlets in the world especially in remote areas with conflict and in rural areas as it is mobile and one can take it wherever one wishes. With the entrance of mobile phones around, one can listen to the radio at any given time and place. As we celebrate World Radio Day today, the Tanzania Media for Community Development (TAMCODE) would like to pay tribute to all radio anchors all over the world for their noble work as radio is a timeless tool for connection, education and storytelling. Beyond delivering news, and entertainment, radio promotes and preserves our culture, traditions and knowledge passing them down through generations. By sharing the voices of the elders, showcasing traditional crafts, music and language and amplifying indigenous wisdom, radio keeps our cultural heritage alive. It inspires, educates, and highlights the richness of our shared human legacy. This is also why UNESCO is promoting World Radio Day and the safeguarding of cultural heritage worldwide. With the support of the UNESCO-Alwaleed Philanthropies project, TAMCODE is providing training to journalists in various regions of Tanzania (Rukwa and Katavi) to strengthen opportunities for local radio stations and young professionals. This initiative aims to empower stakeholders and journalists to use their platforms as a medium for promoting culture and education, ensuring that radio continues to be a powerful tool for community engagement and knowledge-sharing. As radio celebrates its second century, we honor its role in connecting past and future. Radio fosters a deep understanding that culture is our common good, a legacy that transcends borders, unites us and strengthens the fabric of our societies. As we mark this special day, TAMCODE would like to call upon radio journalists across Tanzania to utilize their microphones to promote our cultural heritage and peace especially during the upcoming general elections 2025. As journalists, you have the role to utilize your pens and microphones to create public awareness on civic and voters’ education as well as to promote free and fair elections. May you always be messengers of peace in the country.
Happy World Radio Day.
